Children and adults discover the fascinating science behind soft drink bottlink

Have you ever wondered what goes behind the manufacture of a soft drinks bottle? How the plastic bottles are manufactured and filled? At Science in the City, which took place in Valletta on September 26, visitors were taken through the processes and quality checks that go into making the world’s best known beverage – Coca-Cola.

The General Soft Drinks Co. Ltd (GSD), responsible for bottling and distributing a wide range of soft drinks across Malta, set up an innovative exhibition stand, where the Open Happiness Truck was transformed into a laboratory.

The public could experience and witness all the stages involved in the production of the popular soft drink, from the manufacturing of the bottle, to filling, capping, labelling and packing. Members of the public were also invited to perform some hands-on quality checks.

During the presentation, visitors at the Coca-Cola lab stand first learnt about the company’s commitment towards minimising the environmental impact of its products and operations, with a particular focus on recycling, water stewardship and also its involvement in the Alter Aqua programme, energy efficiency, and climate protection.

Visitors then learnt about the different stages in the whole process and the science behind this as well as how the company ensures it produces a high quality product.  Anyone wishing to view the whole process can book a visit to GSD’s Visitors Gallery “The World of Coca-Cola Malta” by logging on http://www.gsd.com.mt/the-world-of-coca-cola-malta-tour.

GSD is part of the Mizzi Organisation, a group of companies spanning a broad portfolio of business interests and industry sectors, including retail, automotive, tourism and leisure, education, manufacturing, real estate and mechanical and engineering contracting.
